| The area of Bangladesh is 148,939 sq. km and its present population is estimated to be over 129.3 million (population census 2001 preliminary report, August 2001, BBS), which is increasing at the rate of 1.48% annually. Regarding the current health situation of the country, available health statistics indicate that, 50% of the babies are born underweight, 75% of 0-5 years old are malnourished and 20% of them belong to third degree malnutrition, over 75% of women and children suffer from anemia. Infant and maternal mortality rates are 77 and 4.2 thousand respectively. |

| Moreover1111 the proportion of women giving birth without trained birth attendants are 75%. Although 80% of the population of the country live in rural areas, the existing health services is one of the basic rights of a citizen but it is not accessible to the poor people of the rural areas of the country. It is quite disheartening to mention that, Taka 101.28 (US $2.53 approx), which is 1.25% of the capita GDP, is spent per person in Bangladesh for their health care. Kulara is one of the latest developed upazilas of the country under Moulvibazar district 679 sq. km area, situated at a distance of about 200-km towards the northeastern part of the capital city. It has 17 Unions with a total population of 406,000 of which 200,000 female and 206,000 male. It as also indigenous population Khasi and Monipuri as well as a large number of laborers are in 3 tea estates. The sources of the current health services available in Kulara are a upazila Health Complex and a 10 bed hospital run by the Norwegian Mission. The Impact Foundation provided services for the elimination of Polio in collaboration with the Government and the Moulvibazar BNSB Eye Hospital conducts eye camps for removing cataract once or twice a year. These services are not adequate in comparison to the needs of the population of the area. |
